The Indian city governments are grappling with massive generation of plastic waste today. As only 60% of plastic waste is recycled in India, the remaining 40% reaches the streets, landfills and water bodies. Plastic causes a unique problem as it is non-biodegradable. This causes it to be a huge threat to public health and the environment.
Through the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2018, the Indian government has addressed the need for tackling the rampant consumption of single-use plastics. The country is also committed to phase out single use plastics by 2022, and many states and private organizations have been following suit. The cities are keen to take concrete actions towards plastics reuse, recycle and upcycle. This requires the exploration of possible solutions that follow the 4Rs of waste management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recovery) as well as highlights the need for well-laid policies.
In this regard, Administrative Staff College of India and UNDP India have created a platform through INK@WASH for innovators to showcase their innovations to build awareness among cities about the product and process innovations in segregation, collection, processing and value creation. The INK@WASH platform provides the innovator an excellent opportunity to network with the many stakeholders that are involved in plastic waste management through an e-Exhibition to be held on 30th of January, 2021.
This initiative has led to the identification of sixty innovators who can provide suitable and sustainable solutions to cities that are keen for immediate procurement and implementation. The INK@WASH 2.0 event on 30 January 2021 will showcase 20 of these innovations. A compilation of these twenty innovative solutions is documented in the Book of Innovations that can be accessed by city officials and other stakeholders as ready reckoner to assist them in tackling the menace of plastic waste.
